APA 7 citation examples and reference-list format

Use APA 7 format examples to identify the work you actually consulted, build a reference-list entry and matching in-text citation, then verify every field against the original source, current APA guidance, and assignment requirements.

Generate a formatting draft, then verify it

A citation generator cannot decide whether a source is credible, whether a claim accurately represents it, whether you should quote or paraphrase, or whether an assignment permits a particular use of AI or translated source. You remain responsible for final source details, citation, and reference list.

APA 7 format examples show a structure, not a source to copy

Identify the work type and version you actually used. An article, report, book, web page, and translated source can require different elements. A pattern becomes useful only after author or group author, date, title, source or container, pages, DOI or URL, and relevant fields have been checked against the original item.

Fictional learning example: link a fictional in-text citation to a fictional reference

This fictional learning example is invented for practice; it is not a real source, reference, in-text citation, or bibliography entry to submit. In a fictional paragraph, a writer uses the invented parenthetical citation “(Rivera, 2025)” only after describing an invented source-based idea. Its fictional reference-list entry points to the same invented work and includes only invented details. The example demonstrates matching, not a publication, evidence claim, or format to paste into coursework.

An eight-step APA 7 citation workflow

  1. Confirm APA and course rule. Check edition, instructor exception, source type, and author–date placement.
  2. Open work used. Work from actual item, not preview or copied bibliography.
  3. Confirm type, version, and container. Distinguish article, chapter, report, webpage, dataset, translation, edition, and medium.
  4. Collect original details. Record contributors, date, title, container, volume or issue, pages, DOI or stable URL, and specific fields.
  5. Create transparent draft. Use matching source type but do not treat output as substitute for verification.
  6. Compare official examples. Check ordering, capitalization, punctuation, missing fields, DOI or URL treatment, and category choice under current APA guidance.
  7. Link text and reference. Make each borrowed idea point to proper in-text citation and matching entry.
  8. Reopen record before submission. Recheck rule, original item, version, fields, official example, in-text match, complete list, and disclosure.

Prepare source data before formatting APA 7

APA formatting depends on reliable source data. Journal article, book chapter, report, webpage, and translated or non-English source may each require different information. Start with the version and source record actually consulted. APA Style's author–date guidance explains how in-text author and date should point readers to a complete reference for the same work. APA Style's reference examples organizes examples by work category, while Purdue OWL explains reference-list matching, alphabetical order, hanging indents, and general formatting rules. CSUDH Library's APA 7 guide provides a university-library walkthrough of in-text and reference-list components. Follow the source type and current rule that apply to the work you actually used.
