Researcher-first revision

Research paper revision checklist: fix the argument before the commas

Inspect a research paper from assignment fit and evidence to paragraphs, citations, language, and final submission responsibility.

Revision is more than proofreading

Proofreading can improve a sentence, but it cannot repair an unclear purpose, unsupported inference, disorganized section, missing explanation, weak source record, or conclusion that reaches beyond evidence. Start with decisions that affect meaning, then move to sentence-level editing and format.

An eight-step research paper revision workflow

  1. Reopen task and reader. Check assignment, rubric, section instructions, word limit, genre, audience, citation system, and submission rule.
  2. Test focus and central claim. Check whether paper answers its specific research question, purpose, or thesis without widening scope.
  3. Map argument and section jobs. Check sequence, repeated points, missing reasoning, transitions, and section responsibility.
  4. Read each paragraph as a unit. Identify point, support, explanation, connection, and limit.
  5. Verify evidence and source records. Open original sources and check details, quotations, paraphrased meaning, data context, and attribution.
  6. Keep limits, objections, and uncertainty visible. Check counterevidence, alternate explanation, method boundary, and certainty language.
  7. Edit language and required format last. Check terminology, clarity, cohesion, grammar, citations, reference list, and required style after argument is stable.
  8. Perform reader and responsibility pass. Confirm you can explain every claim, source, decision, and permitted use of writing support.

Fictional learning example

This fictional learning example is invented for practice; it is not a real student paper, study, source, finding, citation, or paragraph to submit. A fictional writer has a polished paragraph claiming a fictional intervention “proved” an outcome. On reopening a fictional study note, writer finds a small voluntary survey rather than a controlled study. Writer changes claim to a bounded association, adds fictional context and limitation, checks fictional citation, and only then edits wording. This example does not provide evidence for a real intervention.

Use university guidance alongside the actual assignment

George Mason University Writing Center begins with task requirements, thesis, paragraphs, source integration, documentation, and later sentence-level checks. UNC Writing Center separates subject/audience/purpose, organization, paragraphs, sentences, and final checks. Excelsior OWL covers focus, transitions, source credibility, integration, and acknowledgement of paraphrases and summaries.
