How to synthesize sources in a literature review

Use a synthesis matrix to organize source notes, compare themes and methods, and turn relationships across sources into a careful literature-review narrative.

What synthesis means

Synthesis puts multiple sources in conversation around a theme, question, variable, trend, or method. It is not an author-by-author sequence of summaries and it does not force agreement where sources describe different settings, evidence, or conditions.

An eight-step matrix-to-synthesis workflow

  1. Set question and boundary. Define question, review purpose, source types, time range, discipline, and assignment expectations before adding notes.
  2. Keep sources traceable. Record citation or stable identifier with relevant claims, methods, context, findings, limits, and exact source location needed to revisit.
  3. Select evidence for question. Keep only material that helps answer, frame, complicate, or explain focused question; distinguish quotation, paraphrase, and own note.
  4. Compare like with like. Use columns or tags for themes, variables, methods, population, setting, evidence type, and limitation so distinctions remain visible.
  5. Find relationships and differences. Group notes by shared pattern, contrast, trend, method, or condition; reopen original source whenever note or relationship is unclear.
  6. Check gaps and counterexamples. Ask what is genuinely underrepresented and what requires more searching, different term, or different source type.
  7. Turn labels into claims. Write cautious, cited assertions that say what grouped sources collectively show, where they differ, and why relationship matters.
  8. Read back with responsibility. Check interpretation against original material, cite close to borrowed ideas, follow local rules, and keep only claims you can explain and support.

Fictional learning example: compare source notes, not author names

This entire fictional learning example, including its matrix, is invented for practice; it is not student work, research evidence, or text to submit. Fictional source notes suggest regular planning may be associated with assignment completion, but do not support same conclusion equally. Note A reports positive association across invented sample, whereas Note B observes pattern only among fictional first-year students. Taken together, notes point to possible relationship while also showing self-reported measures and small local samples limit generalisation.

Example groups notes by shared theme, names difference, and makes cautious conclusion. It does not invent research gap or claim causation.

Let the matrix reveal questions, not prove absences

A thin row, an underrepresented population, or a repeated limitation can guide the next search. It does not by itself establish that no research exists. Check your search scope, databases, vocabulary, publication dates, and disciplinary conventions before describing a field as limited or underexplored. A matrix organizes evidence; it cannot replace reading, source evaluation, accurate paraphrasing, citation, or course requirements.

Johns Hopkins Libraries describes a synthesis matrix as a way to record source points and relationships by theme or variable. UNC Writing Center distinguishes a source summary from a review that reorganizes information around ideas, trends, methods, or debates. George Mason University Writing Center recommends selecting material, arranging it in a grid, grouping related points, and turning labels into assertions linked to the research question.
