Research proposal template: structure, example, and checklist

Use a flexible research proposal template to explain focused problem, why it matters, how proposed work could be carried out, and limits readers need to assess. This is a planning model, not completed study or application to submit unchanged.

A proposal argues for planned work, not invented findings

Research proposal gives readers enough information to evaluate proposed problem, purpose, source base, design, feasibility, ethics, and potential contribution. It does not report findings or analysis that do not yet exist. Requirements vary across course assignments, undergraduate projects, theses, dissertations, and grant applications; follow call, rubric, supervisor, and institutional requirements rather than treating one sequence as universal.

Build a proposal readers can assess before the study exists

  1. Confirm the proposal task and reader. Re-read call, rubric, supervisor guidance, genre, length, required sections, funding or approval criteria, and audience. Course proposal, thesis prospectus, grant application, and humanities project can need different evidence, headings, appendices, permissions, or budget detail.
  2. Define a bounded problem and purpose. State what you plan to investigate, why problem matters in defined context, what is inside and outside proposed scope, and what well-informed but non-specialist reader needs to understand. Do not mistake broad topic for research problem.
  3. Build a traceable evidence base. Record relevant question, claim, method, context, result, limitation, and citation for sources you have actually read. Synthesize patterns, differences, and limits by theme or method; do not claim no research exists merely because quick search was thin.
  4. Make the rationale proportionate. Explain why specific problem and proposed question are worth investigating with support from reviewed material. Distinguish demonstrated limit, conflict, context, or next question from unsupported promise of novelty or impact.
  5. Match design and methods to the question. Name overall approach, source or participant selection, materials or data, collection steps, analysis plan, and why choices can address stated question. List of tasks is not methodological justification.
  6. Test access, feasibility, and ethics. Check time, skills, training, access, data availability, recruitment, costs, permissions, privacy, consent, risk, required review, and alternatives. Describe constraints honestly rather than implying approval, resource, or participant pool you do not have.
  7. State bounded anticipated contribution. Describe what completed work might clarify, refine, extend, or make possible if carried out as planned. Do not report imagined findings, predict success, or promise effects beyond evidence path.
  8. Reverse-check coherence and revise. Trace problem to rationale, literature, question, methods, feasibility, ethics, anticipated contribution, timeline, and references. Use feedback to revise scope and wording, then ensure every cited source and proposed step remains accurate.

A fictional model can help you practise proposal alignment, but use only real requirements and evidence you can verify. Do not invent problem, source, gap, method, participant, permission, ethics approval, data access, budget, qualification, expected finding, or contribution because template expects one.

Fictional learning example: turn broad interest into feasible proposal

This fictional learning example is invented for practice; it is not a real proposal, project, source set, method, permission, ethics approval, expected result, or plan to submit. Fictional writer interested in peer-feedback routines might narrow topic to defined student group and course context; identify limited fictional question about how students describe usable feedback; review fictional and verified planning prompts on feedback and revision; propose small, permission-aware interview or document-analysis approach; and state what access, time, and ethics limits would make fictional plan realistic. Example illustrates alignment among choices, not evidence that outcome will occur.

Use a proposal decision record before drafting

Problem-and-scope check: define what proposal investigates, who or what it concerns, and what it will not answer. Evidence-and-rationale check: trace key background claim, synthesis point, and cautious research limitation to verified sources. Question-to-method check: show how design, materials or data, analysis, and alternative approach address question. Feasibility-and-ethics check: account for access, training, time, costs, permissions, privacy, consent, risk, and institutional review.

Use only structure the proposal requires

Working title, problem and rationale, questions, literature review, design and methods, feasibility plan, expected contribution, references, timeline, budget, qualifications, data management, and appendices serve different purposes. Include only sections actual call, discipline, supervisor, or approval process requires.

Use university guidance and local requirements

UConn’s Office of Undergraduate Research recommends making purpose, execution steps, significance, audience, and feasibility specific and allowing time for feedback and revision. USC Libraries explains that a proposal must justify need to study problem while presenting practical ways to conduct work; literature, design, methods, potential barriers, and limits should be aligned to proposal's objectives. University of Illinois Writers Workshop offers prompts for scope, coherence, feasibility, technical expertise, precision, and clarity.
