Research paper conclusion practice
Conclusion section example for a research paper
Use this fictional learning example to bring a research paper to a concise close by synthesizing the central answer, contribution, and a carefully bounded implication. It is a planning model, not text to submit unchanged.
What a Conclusion should do
A Conclusion returns readers to completed paper's central answer or argument. It synthesizes contribution in fresh language, keeps limitations and negative detail visible, states proportionate implication, and may identify focused next step. It should not add new data, citations, or broad claims evidence cannot support.
How to build a Conclusion section step by step
- Confirm the ending task. Check whether assignment calls final section Conclusion, Discussion, Reflection, Implications, Recommendations, or a combined section, then identify what belongs in required genre.
- Return to completed question. Revisit final research question, purpose, thesis, or central problem in language matching paper actually completed. If scope or objective changed, align Introduction and Conclusion.
- Synthesize evidence path. Show how main claim, reasons, results, source relationships, analysis, and limitations converge to address completed question. Do not list headings, repeat abstract, or copy Results and Discussion sentence by sentence.
- Name bounded contribution. State what paper adds, clarifies, qualifies, documents, or helps readers see differently in relation to defined problem and conversation; match contribution to design, evidence, setting, population, and uncertainty.
- Keep limitations and negative detail visible. Retain limitations, unexpected or negative results, unresolved questions, and conditions qualifying final takeaway. Do not invent a limitation for effect.
- Explain why answer matters. Move from specific completed problem to realistic implication, significance, or broader context grounded in analysis already developed. Avoid unsupported universal policy or application claim.
- Place future research once. Link future research to a real limitation, unanswered question, conflicting finding, or next test; do not repeat recommendation already developed in Discussion unless assignment requires recap.
- Run no-new-material check. Verify statistic, quotation, citation, finding, counterargument, recommendation, method detail, and claim was already established in paper. Move genuine new evidence to relevant body section.
Fictional learning example: close a completed paper without inflating contribution
This fictional learning example is invented for practice; it is not a real finding, source, limitation, contribution, recommendation, or conclusion to submit. A fictional paper examined an association between weekly planning and assignment completion in defined self-report sample. Its fictional conclusion returns to completed question, synthesizes fictional design, reported association, cautious Discussion, and cross-sectional limitation, then says work may help frame focused future longitudinal question. It does not add invented statistic or citation, convert association into cause, promise universal student-support policy, claim contribution fictional analysis did not establish, or repeat recommendation its fictional Discussion already handled.
Use a final synthesis record before you end the draft
- Question-to-answer check: does final takeaway answer completed question, purpose, or thesis—not earlier version of topic?
- Contribution check: can you trace each claimed contribution to specific analytical path, finding, source relationship, or qualified insight already established?
- Reach check: do scope, design, population, source, method, negative detail, and limitation still constrain significance or application claim?
- New-material check: can you point to earlier paper section that introduced every statistic, quotation, citation, counterargument, recommendation, and future-research premise?
Conclusion self-check
- Have you returned to completed research question or central argument?
- Have you synthesized contribution without copying abstract sentence by sentence?
- Does implication remain within evidence, design, and scope?
- Have you retained limits and negative detail where they qualify final takeaway?
- Have you removed new data, citations, and unsupported generalisations?
- Does final takeaway follow from claim, support, reasoning, and limits already established in body?
Use writing-center guidance and local requirements
[USC Libraries' conclusion guidance](https://libguides.usc.edu/writingguide/conclusion) describes conclusion as synthesis derived from analysis, not repeated topic list or research problem; it recommends concise contribution and significance grounded in completed paper, appropriate future research, and no new information. [Sacred Heart University Library's conclusion guidance](https://library.sacredheart.edu/c.php?g=29803&p=185935) likewise emphasizes synthesis, clear larger significance, honest qualification through problems or negative results, and avoidance of unsupported speculation or new material. [Harvard College Writing Center's conclusion guidance](https://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/conclusions) emphasizes that endings depend on discipline and full argument, and can return to what, why it matters, and what follows without exhaustive repetition. Follow course or journal rules where they differ.
Place implications carefully
Decide whether implications, limits, and future research belong in Discussion or final paper-level takeaway.
Use Discussion guide
Recheck Discussion path
Confirm interpretation, comparisons, limitations, and recommendations were established before final synthesis.
Read Discussion example
Trace findings to Results
Verify every final claim, negative detail, and limitation has reported evidence path.
Read Results example
Return to final question
Check conclusion answers completed research question rather than broad original topic.
Use question guide
Frame justified next question
Connect future research to real unresolved point or limitation without saying no research exists.
Read gap guide
Locate contribution in prior work
Use theme, method, finding, context, and limit comparisons to keep contribution claims precise.
Use synthesis matrix
Choose Conclusion phrases
Select synthesis, contribution, limitation, implication, and future-research language after checking responsibility.
Use Conclusion phrases
Calibrate final claim
Match conclusion certainty and significance to study design, evidence, scope, and uncertainty.
Use hedging guide
Check argument path
Make final takeaway follow from claim, support, reasoning, and limits in body.
Use argument framework
Keep final claims traceable
Check sources, paraphrases, quotations, and references before repeating claim in last section.
Read source-use guide
Verify citations in context
Confirm recalled source was accurately cited and already integrated into paper.
Check citations
Check Abstract
Make paper summary report completed work accurately and concisely.
