Interpret results rather than repeat them

A Discussion explains what principal findings mean for research question. It compares pattern with relevant earlier research, tests alternatives, explains cautious implication, and identifies limitations that affect interpretation. New evidence, unsupported claims, and a second Results section do not belong here unless assignment explicitly combines sections.

How to build a Discussion section step by step

  1. Check the Discussion contract. Confirm whether assignment separates Results, Discussion, and Conclusion or combines them, then locate interpretation, implications, limitations, recommendations, and future research according to required genre.
  2. Reopen the reported finding. Name specific result, comparison, pattern, theme, exception, or unresolved question being interpreted. Use short bridge from Results; do not repeat table, statistic, quotation, or full Results paragraph.
  3. Explain a bounded meaning. State what reported evidence may suggest for research question in language that fits design, measure, analysis, population, context, and uncertainty. Separate interpretation from fact reported in Results.
  4. Compare with a specific research relationship. Identify what aligns, differs, extends, or remains uncertain in relation to same question, evidence, setting, method, population, or outcome. Cite each source-based relationship accurately.
  5. Consider alternatives and unexpected detail. Test plausible competing explanation, unexpected finding, negative result, contextual factor, measurement issue, or design feature. Label speculation as speculation.
  6. Name limitations that change reach. Explain how verified sample, setting, source, measure, design, missing data, timing, analytic choice, or other limitation affects interpretation, transferability, or certainty. Do not invent limitation for effect.
  7. State a proportionate implication or next question. Link analysis to theory, practice, policy, or further research only where evidence and scholarship support move. Make recommendations conditional and future research specific.
  8. Reconcile section boundaries. Check that facts, statistics, themes, quotations, and displays were reported in Results; comparisons are source-supported; and any final takeaway or repeated recommendation appears once in required conclusion structure.

Fictional learning example: interpret a reported pattern without making it a causal or universal claim

This fictional learning example is invented for practice; it is not a real finding, source, comparison, limitation, policy recommendation, or paragraph to submit. A fictional Results section reported an association between weekly planning and assignment completion in one fictional self-report sample. A fictional Discussion briefly bridges to association, says it may be consistent with an invented account of planning as a support routine, and compares it cautiously with an invented study in different setting. It names fictional cross-sectional self-report limitation, considers reverse direction or unmeasured factor, and proposes fictional longitudinal question. It does not invent supporting source, claim planning caused completion, promise universal intervention, or add statistic Results did not report.

Use an interpretation record before choosing a confident sentence

  • Finding bridge: can readers locate exact reported result, theme, exception, or unanswered question being interpreted?
  • Meaning path: can you distinguish what data reported, what you infer, and what prior research supports?
  • Comparison basis: can you name shared question and particular evidence, design, setting, population, measure, or outcome that aligns or differs?
  • Reach check: can you identify alternatives, limitations, uncertainty, and conditions before stating implication or next question?

Discussion self-check

  • Have you interpreted principal finding rather than repeated every result?
  • Have you kept causal language out of correlational design?
  • Are comparisons with previous research accurately cited?
  • Have you named limitation without undermining whole study?
  • Have you avoided new results or evidence?
  • Do explanations and implications remain proportionate to design, scope, and uncertainty?
